FIND THE RIGHT KIND OF PRACTICE

Place value & ordering

Reason about digit positions and compare possible numbers.

A digit changes a number differently depending on whether it is placed in the hundreds, tens or ones position. Choosing a position before seeing the next digit creates a useful opportunity to explain uncertainty and value.

Keep place-value reasoning separate from the game score: Number Maxing scores a round by the rank of an arrangement among the possible distinct arrangements, not by simply adding the three-digit numbers.

How to choose

  • Number MaxingPlace each revealed digit once, then compare the arrangement with the best possible number.
  • Math 'n' HatchIts Addition & Subtraction curriculum progresses to bigger-number calculations.

A suggested discussion

use the same three digits to make the largest and smallest possible numbers, including a repeated digit.

  • Which position has the largest effect on the number?
  • What changes when a digit is repeated?
  • How does your arrangement compare with the best possible arrangement?

Adapt this suggestion to your learner. It is not an implemented game feature or curriculum standard.
