Math skills and prerequisites
What this game practices
- Double equal numbers
- Predict the result of a whole-board slide
- Plan several moves while preserving empty spaces
Explore: Addition · Number patterns · Spatial reasoning & planning
Before playing
- Recognize equal numbers
- Understand addition and doubling
Getting started
Open 2048 from the arcade. A board starts immediately; no difficulty selection is needed.
Guest play is available. Platform coins require a verified signed-in account and an active player profile.
How to play
- Use the arrow keys or W/A/S/D on desktop. On touchscreens, swipe the board in the direction you want every egg to move.
- Eggs slide as far as they can. Two equal eggs that meet combine into an egg worth their sum.
- Each egg can take part in one merge during a move. A successful move adds a new 2 or 4 egg in an empty space.
- Reach 2048 to see the hatch message, then choose Keep Playing or New Game. A full board ends the run only when no adjacent equal eggs can merge.
- New Game opens a confirmation; Keep Playing cancels it. Use the sound button to toggle sound. An active board can resume when you return.
TRY THE REASONING
Worked example
Predict one left swipe
- Imagine a row reading 2, 2, 4, empty.
- Swipe left: the two 2s become 4, leaving 4, 4, empty, empty before the new egg appears.
- The new 4 does not merge again during that same move. On a later left swipe, the two 4s can become 8.
Doubling tells you the new value; the one-merge-per-move rule tells you how many moves the plan needs.
Scoring, success and round endings
- Each merge adds the value of its new egg to Score: 2 + 2 adds 4 points; 4 + 4 adds 8.
- Best tracks the best merge score; Best Egg tracks the largest egg reached. Neither is the same as the sum currently on the board.
- For eligible profiles, a natural game over awards floor(final merge score / 4) platform coins. Starting a new game does not collect that reward.
Modes, settings and progression
Standard board
One 4 by 4 ruleset with no difficulty selector. Keep Playing after 2048 continues the same run.
Strategies and troubleshooting
- Keep a large egg near a chosen corner and build compatible eggs beside it.
- Check all four directions before moving; a move that opens space can be better than the biggest immediate merge.
- Say the doubling calculation aloud before swiping. Avoid assuming a newly merged egg can merge again immediately.
Classroom and home use
Suggested activity: Pause before a move and have a partner predict one row's new values and score. Compare the prediction with the actual slide.
Questions to discuss
- Why does 2, 2, 4 need another move to make 8?
- Which direction keeps more empty spaces?
- How is merge score different from the total of the visible eggs?
This is a teaching suggestion, not an extra mode or a promised learning outcome.
Play and progress
Guest play does not require an account. For shared arcade coin rewards, use a verified account with an active player profile. Game scores and shared coins are different; only confirmed platform awards update the shared balance. Follow each game’s guide for its own restart and resume behavior.
