Egg Barrage

Read an ordered pair, fire at that location and use hit-and-miss clues to find the hidden enemy fleet.

Math skills and prerequisites

What this game practices

  • Read coordinates in X, Y order
  • Locate positions on a numbered grid
  • Use previous shots to plan a search

Explore: Spatial reasoning & planning · Logic & deduction

Before playing

  • Recognize the numbers 0 to 5
  • Distinguish horizontal and vertical directions
  • Understand that each coordinate names one grid location

Getting started

Open Egg Barrage from the Arcade and choose START.

Use ATTACK to see enemy waters. MY FLEET shows your own vessels and incoming shots.

Look at the axes: X increases from left to right; Y increases from bottom to top.

How to play

  1. Use the X and Y arrow buttons to choose two numbers from 0 to 5.
  2. Read TARGET as (X, Y), then choose FIRE EGG!
  3. Watch the shot result: a hit strikes a vessel, and a miss marks empty water.
  4. Wait for the CPU's turn to finish before selecting your next shot. A coordinate already used cannot be fired at again.
  5. Follow nearby locations after a hit to find the rest of a horizontal or vertical vessel. Destroy all three enemy vessels before your own fleet is destroyed.

TRY THE REASONING

Worked example

Find (2, 3)

  1. Set X to 2: this is the third column because the labels begin at 0.
  2. Set Y to 3: this is the fourth row counting upward from the bottom.
  3. Check TARGET: (2, 3), then fire at the intersection. The result tells you whether a hidden vessel occupies that location.

The first number chooses the horizontal position; the second chooses the vertical position. Coordinates locate a shot, while its result supplies new evidence.

Scoring, success and round endings

  • The current fleet contains one three-cell vessel and two two-cell vessels. Every cell of a vessel must be hit to destroy it.
  • The results screen reports shots fired, hits and accuracy. Accuracy is hits divided by shots, rounded to a percentage.
  • Sinking vessels and clearing the enemy fleet are the platform reward accomplishments; individual hits are not separate coin awards.

Modes, settings and progression

ATTACK

Search the hidden enemy fleet using the coordinate controls.

MY FLEET

Inspect your visible fleet and the CPU's shot history. This changes the view, not the match.

Strategies and troubleshooting

  • Say the coordinate aloud before firing: X first, Y second.
  • Keep track of misses so you do not search the same location twice.
  • After a hit, test nearby horizontal or vertical cells and use the new result to refine your plan.

Classroom and home use

Suggested activity: Have partners alternate as coordinate caller and navigator. The caller names a coordinate; the navigator explains its location before firing. Swap roles after each CPU turn.

Questions to discuss

  • How is (2, 3) different from (3, 2)?
  • Why is the bottom-left location (0, 0)?
  • What evidence supports your next shot?

This is a teaching suggestion, not an extra mode or a promised learning outcome.
