Math skills and prerequisites
What this game practices
- Calculate the answer to a displayed equation
- Match equivalent equation and answer cards
- Use the positions of cards you have already revealed
Explore: Addition · Subtraction · Multiplication · Division
Before playing
- Read whole numbers and the symbol for the chosen operation
- Know or work out facts in the selected mode
Getting started
Open Math Match from the Arcade and choose Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, or Division.
Play as a guest, or use a verified account with a selected player profile to save platform coin rewards.
How to play
- Click or tap a face-down card to reveal it.
- Work out the equation, or remember the number and its position.
- Reveal a second card. An equation and its correct answer stay face up as a matched pair.
- If they do not match, wait for them to turn back over and try again.
- Find all eight pairs. Use Play Again for another board or Change Math Mode to choose a different operation.
TRY THE REASONING
Worked example
Match an addition fact
- Reveal a card showing 7 + 5.
- Calculate 7 + 5 = 12.
- Reveal the card showing 12. Those two cards form a pair.
- If you reveal a different answer, remember its position for a later turn.
A pair needs one equation and its answer; two answer cards with the same number are not an equation–answer pair.
Scoring, success and round endings
- The progress display counts matched pairs out of eight. There is no countdown or speed bonus.
- Eligible player profiles receive 25 platform coins for each successful pair, once per board. There is no additional board-clear bonus.
Modes, settings and progression
Addition
Match addition equations with sums up to 40.
Subtraction
Match subtraction equations with nonnegative whole-number answers.
Multiplication
Match products using factors from 2 to 12.
Division
Match exact whole-number divisions using divisors and quotients from 2 to 12.
Strategies and troubleshooting
- Say the equation and answer before choosing the second card.
- Use a known answer card when you reveal its equation, rather than guessing a new position.
- New Board and changing operation start a fresh board; wait for the current pair to resolve before choosing again.
Classroom and home use
Suggested activity: Partners alternate turns. Before the second card, the player explains the calculation while the partner recalls previously revealed positions.
Questions to discuss
- How did you work out that answer?
- Which revealed card could match this equation?
- Can you check the multiplication using a related division fact?
This is a teaching suggestion, not an extra mode or a promised learning outcome.
